Community Bank & Trust Sponsors High-Tech Phone Notification for Area Schools

If you’re a parent, you may have been there before … working in your office when a co-worker stops by to tell you they’ve heard that your child’s school is closing early due to snow. You call the school to get more details only to find the telephone line is busy.   Scenarios like this are frustrating for parents and school officials alike. “Canceling school mid-day is one of the worst headaches a school administrator can face,” says Cheatham County Director of Schools Lynn Seifert. “Most schools rely on the media to notify parents, and that can be difficult if parents are at work and do not have access to radio or television. This often results in students and staff waiting hours for a ride home.”   In an effort to improve such situations, the Cheatham and Robertson County Board of Education has purchased a web-based service that will notify, almost simultaneously, all parents in the event of school closings due to inclement weather, bomb threats, fires or other emergencies.   Teachers also will be able to notify parents of upcoming assignments, tests, or open houses without having to call individual parents.   The service is being underwritten by Community Bank & Trust and was initiated by the bank’s Cheatham County Community Advisory Board.   The SchoolReach Instant Parent Contact Service is a fully hosted (ASP) service, which requires no on-site hardware or telephone lines. A personal computer, internet access via landline or cellular telephone is all that is needed to fully utilize the system. The cost of the system in Cheatham County is approximately $20,000 and will benefit an estimated 7,000 students. In Robertson County the cost is $35,000 and will reach the families of 11,000 students, NorthCrest Medical Center has partnered with us in Robertson County to pay for this incredible communication system. “The school system values school-to-home communication,” Seifert says. “This system will greatly facilitate our teachers’ ability to reach all parents. We feel so fortunate to have a local bank such as Community Bank & Trust that is interested in the welfare of our students and the progress of our school system.”
